Heritage and Modern Times is a special international scientific-methodical journal for cultural heritage issues, published with the support of the Institute of the international relations, history and oriental studies of the Kazan (Volga) federal university on the basis of Kazan Federal University. The Republic of Tatarstan is not an occasional choice to host the journal. During last decades Tatarstan became a recognized leader in the implemented projects of heritage preservation and use. Here large-scale researches of historical and cultural monuments are conducted, eight museum-preserves created, three large complexes – the Kazan Kremlin, the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological complex and Assumption Cathedral and Monastery of the town-island of Sviyazhsk are inscribed into UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

Nowadays cultural heritage gains fundamental value for further development of our country. It serves as the basis of its spiritual and intellectual potential and defines the high place of Russia among world great powers. Cultural heritage allows to feel the unity of the Russian Federation cultural space, and at the same time to reveal the identity of each people living in the country.

The scientific concept of the journal is based on the following main principles:

- heritage is regarded as a broad reflection of man-nature interaction historical experience, considering both tangible and intangible heritage, traditional technologies, historically developed economic and environmental management patterns, a cultural landscape in general;

- priority of landscape approach to heritage preservation and important role of protected historical and cultural territories formation for its realization;

- heritage is concerned a special resource of the territory and an important factor of regional development in the context of modern social-cultural and social-economic processes.

In the statements, mentioned above, the journal follows the scientific school of the Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage named after Dmitri Likhachyov, created in 1992–2012.

Research tasks of the journal are consideration of methodological questions connected with identification of tangible and intangible cultural heritage objects, their preservation and use; interaction in the sphere of natural and cultural heritage, argumentation and practical experience of creation of various types of historical and cultural territories; world practice analysis for  carrying out nomination files and management plans for world heritage sites, increasing awareness of modern research results.
